A patient suffering from debilitating lower back pain for the past three months, self-employed HVAC man unable to work a full day at work and therefore unable to bring in enough income, had been treating his pain with the standard prescriptions of muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories, and pain medicine. With no substantial relief from medications he was quickly and reluctantly being ushered toward a spine surgery. He definitely did not want to have surgery, but thought there was no other option. His son referred him to our chiropractic office and during the examination he told me that his back pain was too big for chiropractic to handle. He had had severe pain for so long that the only thing that might be able to help would be a surgery. I assured him that we have seen cases very similar to his in the past and have had great results. After explaining to him the cause of his pain was a spinal subluxation pressuring sensitive nerve fibers and treatment with medications were only masking the symptoms and not treating the cause he agreed to try a series of chiropractic care.
After the first chiropractic treatment he got up off the treatment table and tentatively stood up. He slowly moved around with a grimace, expecting to be met with the same severe stabbing, stiff, and debilitating lower back pain that had become his unwanted companion for the past three months. His expression slowly changed to one of shock and bewilderment. His pain wasn’t better, it was GONE! As he began to move more purposefully you could see the disbelief setting in. Something so quick, something so simple, as if just flipping a switch, his back was better. His pain had been so bad, that he was convinced his whole life was going to change. He’s business was suffering and couldn’t see a way of continuing to work with his back condition. After three months of pain, three months of fear, three months of agony, his pain was gone.
